Resilience is different from endurance
Resilience is not…
- being cheerful all the time.
- endurance or strength.
- turning our backs on real problems.
Resilience is a characteristic of our nervous systems. The good news is that our nervous systems can change. We can become more resilient than we are today. We can feel greater ease inside, whatever is going on around us.

Whatever you were handling before… Now there’s COVID-19.
Tools to help you ride the storm
Kiwassa Neighbourhood House staff are on a new frontline: You’re navigating shifting safety and distancing protocols, while you reach out and support vulnerable community members. Whether you’re working with children, new Canadians, Indigenous participants, seniors or youth, it’s your job to stay calm and steady when you and the people around you are on heightened alert.
We’ve had a few months to adjust to new realities. Now as we gradually reopen activities, there’s new worries, more adjustments and decisions to make at work and home.
Uncertainty and news updates may be unsettling to our nervous systems. If it’s hard to sleep or your eating patterns are unpredictable, you are not alone. If you’re struggling to settle your own system so you can help people around you, Shayna can support you through somatic coaching.

Stress lives in the body
The neck tightens, the stomach churns, the jaw clenches. Telling ourselves to ‘let it go’ or ‘just breathe’ often doesn’t calm tense muscles or stop teeth from grinding. Discomfort can make it hard to think clearly and focus. These physical, instinctive reactions need physical strategies.
Using body-centred coaching, Shayna will work with you to find simple techniques that help you settle and find ease inside so you can do what you need to do.
So·ma·tic: relating to the body, especially as distinct from the mind.

Kiwassa Neighbourhood House is partnering with Shayna to support our staff. While in-person training is on hold for now, she is providing individual somatic coaching sessions by video conference.
If you don’t have video capabilities, audio sessions by phone are also available. Each session will last 25 or 50 minutes, depending on what’s useful to you.
Initial sessions and some follow-up sessions are free to all Kiwassa Neighbourhood House staff members.
